Rules: The car/truck had to be sold new in 1991.
Thinking back to 1991 it wasn’t the greatest era for cars. The industry was starting the transition from old school plastic and anemic engines in the 70s/80s to the modern technology we would have in the 21st century. But when I think of 91 one car stands out as the clear choice. Arguably the greatest Japanese car of all time. The Acura NSX a great looking, balanced, and Senna tested supercar.
What car would you buy in 1991?

1991 Isuzu Trooper XS. Not because it was a really great vehicle (it wasn’t bad), but because my first vehicle was a ‘91 Trooper.

Lotus Carlton, without a doubt.

Although 964s are nice, I’d go with the ZR-1.

Wasn’t the Firehawk’s first year 91? If it was I’ll take that.

Since the NSX is already taken, I’ll choose this...
...the 1991 GMC Syclone, the Ferrari killer with a pickup bed.

Looks t be a good durable off roader

My old car obviously. Because If I had SC money in ‘91 I could also afford to get ITBs for it.
*1992 model year but was sold in 1991.

+1 If you bought this new in 1991 and still had it, you could trade it for a new M3 and put some cash in your pocket!
![]() 03/16/2016 at 11:08 |

Well, as I said with the last car (also a Benz?) you didn’t like the look of: it’s fast enough that you won’t have to look at it for very long.
I think it looks fantastic.

You could have picked the NSX but this is good too
![]() 03/16/2016 at 11:09 |
|
Since you took the most obvious one, and I’m in the mood for some open air driving, I’d pick this:
a 1991 Peugeot 205 CTI, I have had 2 of those, and now that I’ve had other cars that seemed better at first, I want one really bad. But finding a good one is really hard. I regret selling mine. Could just be nostalgia though.

Twin Turbo 300ZX. I had the JDM Fairlady equivalent and it was glorious. I can only imagine how great it would be brand spankin new with no worn bushings and what not.

Bentley Continental R. First year it came out, it may have been the most expensive car at the time, but it was worth it.

Aston Martin Virage. I think they’re under appreciated.
![]() 03/16/2016 at 11:12 |

I would take this over an M3 because Mercedes > BMW
![]() 03/16/2016 at 11:13 |
|
I’ll go with the NSX’s little sibling, the Prelude Si, in 4WS trim. I actually own a 1991 Si, but it has ABS instead of 4WS.
Stretching the definition of 1991 a bit, I’d go with a 4th gen Si VTEC, which was sold in Japan starting in mid-late 1991.
![]() 03/16/2016 at 11:13 |
|
This is more comparable to an M5, but fair point.
![]() 03/16/2016 at 11:14 |

Make it 1992, and I’d take a Shooting Brake.
![]() 03/16/2016 at 11:14 |

Well now I’m doubting my choice given that the 3rd Gen supra was a thing and so was the Lister XJS

I’m fairly predictable when it comes to hypothetical car questions for production years between the mid eighties and the very early 2000s.
For ‘91: one 205 GTi 1.9 if you please, in Miami Blue

It’s my favourite*, and a regular contender for the top of all those, ‘Best Hot Hatch Ever’ lists the magazines like.
*Well, maybe not FAVOURITE favourite. There’s the various quick 106s to consider too...

68 is an insane year to cut off on and if you’re sticking with 1968 I can’t take this too seriously.
They looked almost identical 68-72, they removed the metal front bumper for 73 for a refresh. 1974 ruined the rear bumper. 78 started the hatchback glass that just made it even worse.
The C4 is a very like it or hate it car. I like the 80s/90s wedge cars from GM (Camaro, Firebird, Corvette). A lot of people hate them.

The answer is the only car that would be acceptable as a new car today. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Mazda RX-7 FD
![]() 03/16/2016 at 11:59 |

I realized too late I have posted the same answer twice, so I changed it to a Cosworth Scorpio. Marginally slower and auto only but RWD.

Might be Mazda’s greatest car of all time
![]() 03/16/2016 at 12:10 |

Hate is too strong a word here, but I thought they got less interesting-looking starting with 1968, which I believe is a big styling change year. But yeah ... beauty, beholder, all that ....
![]() 03/16/2016 at 12:11 |
|
Yeah, they killed it off at the right time, just as they were starting to go downhill.
I’m bringing my 1991 out of storage soon. Once it’s sorted I’ll do a review of it.
![]() 03/16/2016 at 12:12 |

Since money is no object in this scenario, I'll chose the 928
![]() 03/16/2016 at 12:14 |

One of my all time dream cars. The sound, turbo, AWD and rally heritage is probably what attracts me.
![]() 03/16/2016 at 12:18 |

I bought a ratty one for $400 for the sole reason of... the 4ws worked perfectly still. best $400 i’ve ever spent!
![]() 03/16/2016 at 12:26 |
|
I understand now!
I thought you were saying you liked 1968 but nothing after, I mis-interpreted that.
I LOVED the 68-72 ones. To me, 63-72 (yes big change in 68, complete restyle in my opinion should have been C4 because of how big of a change it was) are the best years of Corvette.
I still love them though and yes, it’s entirely opinion. Like I said people either love or hate the wedge cars.

It was based off of the 300E, which is an E-Class. A 355hp V8 and 160mph was more than enough to smoke an M5 of the period, at least in a straight line. But then there was than infernal Lotus...
![]() 03/16/2016 at 12:46 |
|
Hmm, some interesting choices available. A 993 911? Vector W8? Diablo. Cizeta V16T? Maybe a Shogun. I probably drew more pictures of a Diablo than any other car during that time period, so I'll take the Diablo! Too bad BMW never released an M8, or I'd probably take one of those. The prototype was cool.
![]() 03/16/2016 at 12:48 |
|
Yes, the mechanical 4WS system of the 3rd gen was bulletproof. The electronic system of the 4th and 5th gens...not so much.

You should! I'd love to read it.

I can find something to like about pretty much every car I’ve come in contact with. Remember - last year I drove a Volt and had a lot of fun. This year I borrowed a Honda Civic Hybrid from my buddy’s fleet and realized that yes, driving a stick is like riding a bike - your skills come right back.
![]() 03/16/2016 at 12:50 |

MR2 is a good choice

Haha, we got passed by a Volt on the highway this weekend and my wife was like WAAAAT? I said, yes Volt’s are capable of 85 mph don’t worry.
![]() 03/16/2016 at 13:16 |

in 1991 I would be buying a Mercedes-Benz SL 73 AMG
![]() 03/16/2016 at 13:19 |

I got the car thru Relay Rides, which means it’s the DD of a real human being, so there was no way I was going to push it. Suffice it to say that it was good on the highway and more than sufficient to schlep my 83-year-old mom around and do a big shop.
